6 African countries where women are well represented in government

The study Map of Women in Politics conducted by the IPU (Inter-Parliamentary Union) and the United Nations has put forward a slow increase, but still the presence of women in governments and parliaments. In this sense, Africa is leading the way and several African countries are now among the best students in the world.
Misconceptions and reality

It is often said that in Africa, women and girls are disadvantaged compared with boys. They would have less opportunity to receive a good education, they would be confined to housework and health would be threatened on account of a lack of access to essential health care, which also would explain the very high death rate during deliveries. If these facts can still be true in some places, they are far from reflecting the reality in the continent. Africa has made remarkable progress in the fight for the emancipation of women.
Political parity in the world

The political emancipation of women and their presence in government to participate in decision making in their countries are part of the global development goals since 1995. As an independent agency charged regularly assess the situation in each country in order to measure changes over time.

In the latest report released by the IPU and the UN, it is clear that globally, women hold 715 seats of ministers, only 18% of the total. Only 30 countries have more than 30% of women in government, including Cape Verde, Sweden and France. In terms of continents, America remains the highest ranking with 22.4% share, while Europe and Africa are ranked second and third.

Africa and its good students

In fact, six African countries appear in the top 20 countries with the best male / female parity in parliaments. This is the Rwanda (64%), Seychelles (44%), Senegal (43%), South Africa (42%), Namibia (41%) and Mozambique (40%) . In most countries of the world where parity rates are high, we find that women continue to be assigned to so-called minor ministries (social affairs, education, family ...) and that the sovereign positions as Defense , environment, finance, interior and foreign affairs remain the domain of men.
